Delta Passenger Misses Crucial World Cup Penalty Kick After In-Flight Announcement Blocks the Screen
ATLANTA, GEORGIA — A Delta passenger says he’s done flying with the airline after an in-flight announcement cut across his screen at the worst possible moment during a World Cup match. The clip, shared on TikTok, has since drawn hundreds of thousands of views and sparked a wider conversation about in-flight entertainment interruptions across the airline industry.
TikToker Records Frustration as Penalty Kick Is Blocked Mid-Game
TikTok user @uboxingboy shared a video with over 384,000 views showing the in-flight entertainment screen on a Delta aircraft, where he was watching a World Cup match between South Africa and Mexico. The picture quality was sharp, with minimal lag or stuttering, but right as one of the teams was about to take a penalty kick, a notification appeared across the center of the screen reading, “PA in progress. Please remove your headphones.”
The notification completely obstructed the view of the game at the critical moment. “I hate Delta,” the user wrote in the video’s text overlay, adding in the caption, “Never going in delta again.”
@uboxingboy Bruh never going in delta again 😔 #mexico #worldcup #football
In-Flight Announcements Are Standard Across the Industry
While the TikToker singled out Delta, interrupting in-flight entertainment for PA announcements is standard practice across the airline industry. Airlines are required to ensure that critical announcements are delivered effectively and clearly, meaning such messages often take priority over entertainment systems.
Airport and aircraft PA systems are treated as critical to flight safety, with airlines required to maintain a direct line of communication with passengers, particularly in emergency situations. Even when an announcement feels minor, the underlying system is built around safety-first priorities.
Passengers Are Often Frustrated by Non-Safety Announcements
Even so, many flyers grow frustrated when interruptions have nothing to do with passenger safety. One Reddit thread previously complained that United Airlines interrupted a movie to advertise its loyalty program, which commenters viewed as a money-making tactic rather than a genuine safety measure.
Not everyone shares that frustration, however. In a past column, former airline captain John Cox explained that while some passengers ask captains to limit announcements, others specifically request more updates, such as geographical landmarks or which cities the aircraft is flying over. According to Cox, each captain has to weigh how much information to share while trying to balance these competing passenger preferences.
Internet Reaction Is Mixed Over the Viral Clip
In the comments section, many users sympathized with the TikToker’s frustration. “It is annoying but every airline does it lol,” one user wrote. Another added, “Bro United is worse. They put a massive ‘Announcement in progress’ across the whole screen.”
Others, however, felt the reaction was overblown. “Live television being paused at 36,000 feet traveling 550mph. The most first world problem ever,” one commenter remarked.
