Dear Future Park Beacon Writers,
Thank you for carrying on a legacy and tradition in our school over 100 years old and keeping our newspaper alive. The current Beacon staff are all seniors, so next year it’ll be a fresh start for our paper, with new writers, ideas, and passions. I hope you all will channel those passions and create. Whether you’re interested in science, politics, current events, or pop culture, you’re at liberty to write what you want, so make something of it. The Beacon also gives you an incredible voice in the school as a student; if there’s an issue or problem in the school, you can raise awareness and bring about real change unlike any other.
Being a part of the beacon has taught me so much over the past two years I’ve been on the staff, from my editing skills to my writing ability, how to ask questions, and how to look at things from different perspectives. I’m sure you will improve in many ways as well while being on The Beacon, as the newspaper is a class like no other, being mostly student-led, with you being able to write whatever you want all the while Cohen is right there willing to give you a helping hand (or a kick in the butt) whenever it is needed.
Newspaper can be a great class, but you need to be the one to make it a good experience. Sure, sometimes you’ll encounter some writer’s block or will be unmotivated to write, but at the end of the day, writing things that you know your fellow students and staff will read is unfoundedly rewarding. From making students and teachers laugh when The Bacon rolls around to raising awareness and bringing change to issues you first presented, these are the types of experiences that you can have that are pretty much exclusive to the newspaper experience.
As previously mentioned, thank you so much for keeping the newspaper alive, and hopefully more students will come along just like you, and The Beacon can endure for another hundred years. Good luck in the upcoming year and have fun. I know it was for me.
