Streaming Services Are the New Cable

Jonas Heiser, Writer

Cable is a thing of the past. Streaming services have now taken over, and about 70% of American households have a subscription to at least one according to Forbes. With a new service from Disney+, which ones are really worth the price?

Netflix used to be the powerhouse of streaming services having just about anything you could think of. They began their first original series, House of Cards, back in 2013. It was a huge step forward for them that led to Stranger Things, Black Mirror, Luke Cage, and many others. Netflix was always reliable and never had any issues until mid November 2019, when servers went down for an entire day. This crash caused many viewers to switch services and price may also have been a factor. Currently, the monthly fee for Netflix ranges from $8.99 to $15.99.

Hulu has usually been second to Netflix, but some people disagree. Hulu doesn’t have big names like Netflix but their originals are just as good: The Handmaid’s Tale, Marvel’s Runaways, and Chance. The movies and shows are just as diverse, ranging from obscure to well known. The price for Hulu ranges from $5.99 to $11.99 a month, or a live TV package that is $44.99.

Amazon Prime Video has a lot of TV shows to choose from and is also a more recent streaming service only being 13 years old. Prime video also comes in an Amazon prime bundle which is always a great thing being able to have free shipping on top of great movies. Amazon has good originals as well with The Boys, Jack Ryan, and The Tick.

Disney+ is a brand new streaming service that includes movies, Tv shows, and Disney+ originals from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and The Simpsons. Disney+ has been extremely anticipated by many fans alike. Marvel announced they will be making all new Live action Tv shows that will be cannon in the MCU. Star Wars also announced different live action shows, one of the titles available at launch is The Mandolorian. Disney+ has basically every movie you have grown up with. Disney+ also has a bundle that comes with Hulu and ESPN that would cost you about $13 a month.

Cable may have been a thing of the past but with all these new streaming services its starting to feel like cable  has just been renamed.
