Star Wars is one of the most iconic and recognizable franchises in the United States. Created by George Lucas, the original Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke skywalker novel was published. The novel spawned eight more books and a motion picture series. The movies were released out of order; the original trilogy, which are the fourth, fifth, and sixth books, were the first movies to be released, in the years 1977, 1980, 1983, respectively. Sixteen years later, the prequel trilogy, comprised of the first, second and third novels, was released. The remaining seventh and eighth books received their film adaptations in 2015 and 2017 with the The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

The relevancy that Star Wars has to this day is astounding. Despite the movies being released so sporadically over the years, people never seemed to lose interest in them. The movies’ success can be seen in merchandise and a variety of different shows/series, with more being released even to this day. Almost any form of modern entertainment has been remixed with a Star Wars spin off. The movies have generated over eight billions dollars of revenue over the years, while the franchise as a whole has generated over 27 billion. The series was acquired by Disney for a grand total of about 4 billion dollars. The two most recent films have been released under them, as will the last.

The ninth and final film, Rise of Skywalker was released on December 20, 2019. In the previous film, The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker, sacrifices himself to the Force. Luke’s death in the film left fans anxiously waiting for the epic conclusion to the saga and, as a result, expectations for the ninth movie were set very high.  Rise of Skywalker grossed a whopping $927.50 million in less than a month. The movie also started 2020 off on top of the box office. The movie received mixed reviews from critics: most said the movie was subpar, but none of the reviews were particularly negative.
