Surviving the Holidays

Surviving the Holidays

Jasmine Gonzales, Writer

Even though we all want that picture perfect holiday get together that we see on television, we all know it doesn’t quite work out that way. We live in the real world, with real people who all have different personalities. However, there is a way to survive that battlefield we call the dinner table.

Step 1: Smile

Yes, I know it may be hard and no one likes to swallow their pride, but sometimes it’s necessary. It may even help in the long run to look cheerful.

Step 2: Don’t expect to fix the past.

Don’t use holiday time to heal old wounds. Just eat, have fun, and talk to everyone!

Step 3: Participate

This means in any games and conversations. Actually participate in conversations.

Step 4: Bring a phone charger and ONLY in extreme cases headphones.

Sometimes it’s healthy to escape reality for a second, but only for a second.

Step 5:  Ask to help

Even if you have no intentions of really helping. However, showing you’re polite  may decrease tension or any bad opinions that are forming about you.

Step 6: Be yourself

Though it might be hard and you might want to impress everyone, you won’t. Just be yourself.

Step 7: Be Grateful

Be grateful that you have a family to spend time with, even if it’s chaotic. Always appreciate the things you have instead of dwelling on the negative.

Remember that everyone has different situations going on. You’re not alone. If you follow these simple steps you’ll have no problem surviving the holidays and maybe not even enjoying them. Goodluck!
