It may be hard to believe, but some people are able to make millions from gaming. The prize pools at the end of Esports (electronic sports / eSports) tournaments are the reason why that is possible.The highest prize pool within the eSports world belongs to the popular game, Dota 2. Amounting to over $20 million. Esports involves gaming competition between professional or amateur players. Teams or individuals from around the world gather and compete for the winning prize, which is money and bragging rights.
The eSports scene in the 21st century is ever rising, with millions of fans. It is expected to be over $1 billion in revenue by 2020, with Asia being at the top of the eSports market, followed by North America and Europe. Esports is a great opportunity for companies to get their name out there, by sponsoring players, or entire teams. With the consistent growth of the eSports, the proceeds will continue to excel, and bring together video game fans from around the world.
Esports has long been a controversial topic on whether it should be considered a “real sport”. Now, more people are taking it serious and some eSports competitions are on ESPN (Entertaining and Sports Programming Network). The first time eSports has ever been on ESPN was when the Overwatch League Grand Finals were streamed on July 27th. The ESPN website now has a section dedicated to eSports and also has a twitter strictly for eSports.
The most popular games in the eSports world are Call of Duty, League of Legends, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, and Fortnite. In recent news, Call of Duty just held its first event of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 season: Call of Duty World League in Las Vegas (CWL). The final two competitors were OpTic Gaming and eUnited. OpTic gaming came back for the win, and won the prize of $250,000.
